Why You Should Encourage Your Staff to Get Police Checks

If you run a business that employs staff then this greatly increases your workload and suddenly they become your responsibility in a number of ways as you have to worry about things like taxes and health and safety.

However carrying out all of these different processes is highly important to ensure that you can avoid more trouble for both yourself and for them further down the line. One aspect for instance that you should ensure that you carry out vigilantly is police checks, and whenever hiring new members of staff it is highly wise to ensure that you get them to go through this process first. This is obviously something that is particularly important if they are working with vulnerable groups. If for instance your staff are required to interact with children then it is very important indeed that your staff be checked for any history of violence first. Otherwise you risk potentially putting the children in harm\’s way and this could very seriously damage your company\’s reputation to the point that you have to close down the business if it is revealed that the individual had a history of violence already. Meanwhile there are many other situations where this is particularly important. For instance if you were to employ someone to work in a pharmacy or in a doctor\’s, then you might want to ensure that they have no history of substance abuse which could be harmful to them and potentially put your business out of pocket. However even when there is no specific reason to get your staff checked, it can still put your mind at risk to know that you will be working with someone who has no history of violence or of theft and this can help you to avoid any potential problems. Of course it is your prerogative to decide whether or not to employ someone who does have a criminal record and you will not necessarily rule out anyone who has some kind of mark on their records. However what is important is to still carry out the check so that you are at least aware of their history and so that you can interview them in light of that information. It may well be that the person has changed and that they are no longer a danger or a threat to your company, but even if this is the case you will still need to know their history in order to ascertain whether you think they are now suitable for the role. At the same time if you know that someone has had a short temper in the past, then you might decide to put them to work somewhere involves low amounts of stress and that is unlikely to cause them too much grief. As such then it makes sense for any business to encourage their staff to get a check, or to carry it out on their behalf even if they don\’t have to work with children or the elderly. This is relatively only a very small inconvenience compared to the amount of trouble your business could get into otherwise, and at the same time you owe it to your other staff and your customers to ensure that they are always in safe hands when they are dealing with you.
